Description:

Signalling Thiess’ 75th dam project, Awoonga Dam is situated on the Boyne River south of Gladstone and is the region’s main water source.

In an alliance agreement with Gladstone Area Water Board, the Department of Natural Resources State Water Projects and PPK, Thiess raised the dam by 10m increasing the dam’s capacity from 283,000 megalitres to almost 800,000 megalitres. Associated works included major relocation of road, bridge, rail, power and telecommunications infrastructure.

Thiess originally constructed the Awoonga Dam in the early 1980s to meet Gladstone’s residential and industrial needs and for consumption by the Callide ‘B’ Power Station near Biloela.
