Description:

Leighton Contractors form part of an alliance to deliver the Ballina Bypass project for the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW (RTA). The alliance includes the RTA, Maunsell AECOM, SMEC and Coffey Geotechnics to design and construct the bypass that will provide approximately 12.4km of dual carriageway as part of the 10-year Pacific Highway Upgrade Program.

The Ballina Bypass will stretch from South Ballina at the intersection of the Bruxner and Pacific Highways to just north of Ross Lane, Tintenbar. It will bypass a 19km section of the Pacific Highway and will serve to deliver significant improvements in road safety and reduce travel times. Overall the Ballina Bypass project will allow commuters to avoid the current five roundabouts, traffic lights and 60kph speed zones taking the highway traffic out of the urban area of Ballina.

Major features of the Ballina Bypass project include:
  • 12.4km of dual carriageway
  • new interchanges at Bruxner Highway, Teven Road, Cumbalum and Ross Lane
  • 11.9km of local roads
  • 19 bridges including major structures over waterways
  • more than 1.7 million cubic metres of earthworks
  • approximately 100,000 cubic metres of concrete, and
  • significant treatment of extensive soft and deep soils.
