Thiess Services has entered into an Alliance with Brisbane City Council (BCC) to manage the city's four transfer stations and landfill site at Rochedale, located 17km from the city. Known as the Brisbane Waste Innovations Alliance (BWIA), the Alliance will provide the City of Brisbane with innovative waste management solutions.
Since 1999, Thiess Services had operated the four transfer stations on behalf of BCC under an integrated waste management contract, which also included the transport of waste to landfill, and operation of the Brisbane Landfill.
The BCC transfer stations are located at strategic sites across Brisbane in Nudgee, Willawong, Chandler and Ferny Grove, ensuring accessibility to the public. The sites accept general waste, domestic waste, commercial waste, greenwaste and recyclables from the public, collection vehicles and industry. The landfill site currently accepts 300,000 tonnes of waste per annum.
Brisbane generates approxmately 520,000 tonnes of waste per annum, therefore a key focus of the Alliance will be to explore appropriate recycling and resource recovery technologies beyond traditional and currently employed methods.
All transfer stations are designed to maximise the collection of recyclable products, such as greenwaste, steel, glass, and waste oils. This ensures the effective reuse of materials and minimises waste transported to landfill.
Ferny Grove and Chandler are smaller transfer stations admitting vehicles with a RGVM under 4.5 tonnes. Chandler also accepts domestic waste collection vehicles.
All four transfer stations are fully enclosed and equipped with enviromental controls to ensure minimal impact on local communities. Controls include air deodorisors and dust suppression systems to minimise airborne particles generated from the waste.
Additionally, a fleet of fully enclosed waste transfer vehicles is utilised to transport refuse from each station to landfill or approved recycling facilities. A system of full tarps and contained walking floors ensures minimal enviromental impact through the elimination of liter and dust during the transport process.
