Bundamba Advanced Water Treatment Plant

Client:  Queensland Government
Location:  Queensland
Start:  September 2006
Finish:  June 2008
Contract Type:  Design and construct (Alliance)
Value:  $380 million, Thiess' share is $190 million (at 31 December 2008)
Description:

The Queensland Government awarded a contract to Thiess and Black & Veatch as part of an Alliance to design and construct the Bundamba Advanced Water Treatment Plant (AWTP) in Ipswich, Queensland. The Bundamba AWTP was a major infrastructure project that played a key role in the delivery of an alternative water supply to the south east Queensland region. The plant provides purified recycled water to Swanbank Power Station for use in their cooling processes when generating power, and alleviates pressures on existing dams and waterways.

The Bundamba AWTP was a component of the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project (WCRW), with the objective to construct a 200km network of underground pipelines and three advanced water treament plants at Bundamba, Gibson Island and Luggage Point.  The WCRW project was a response to Australia's water crisis by recycling wastewater for industry and agricultural use.

The AWTP was completed in two stages:
  • Stage 1A: This stage of the project was completed in August 2007. A plant was constructed at Bundamba to treat water for supply to the Swanbank Power Station.
  • Stage1B: The plant was expanded to incorporate additional volumes of water from exising wastewater treatment plants at Oxley and Walcol. This stage was completed in March 2008.

The plant  has the capacity to produce up to 66ML per day of treated water, 20ML of which is supplied to the Swanbank Power Station.
