Leighton Contractors' division, HWE Mining, has been the awarded a contract at Newmont Tanami's Callie Gold Mine since 1995. The underground mine is located 600 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the Tanami Desert of the Northern Territory.

An innovative Alliance contract was established in 2003 between HWE Mining and Newmont Tanami Pty Ltd to integrate the companies' capabilities and reflect a partnership based on collaboration.

HWE provides mechanised underground development and stoping, using drill and blast techniques as well as maintenance and transportation services at Callie.

The mine produces 2 million tonnes of gold ore per annum which equates to 430,000 ounces of gold annually, an execellent result for a mine of its size.  

The life of mine is expected to extend beyond 2015.
