Client:  Babcock and Brown Infrastructure
Location:  Queensland
Start:  December 2006
Finish:  August 2008
Contract Type:  Construct only
Value:  $303 million (at 30 June 2008)
Description:

John Holland was awarded a contract by Babcock and Brown Infrastructure for the upgrade expansion of the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) in Mackay, Queensland. DBCT is a port facility for the export of coal mined in the Bowen Basin region, and is one of the largest coal terminals in the world. The project increased DBCT's capacity from approximately 59Mtpa to 85Mtpa to meet growing global demands for coal.

John Holland's project scope included the erection of an offshore conveyor along a widened jetty extending almost 4km offshore to a fourth berth.

With the expansion works, the Bowen Basin coal mines using the DBCT now have the following benefits:
  • increased loading capacity
  • additional train paths
  • more dependable cycle times
  • more operational flexibility
  • reduced congestion, and
  • reduced dwell time in the port area.
