Deer Park Bypass

Client:  VicRoads
Location:  Victoria
Start:  December 2006
Finish:  April 2009
Contract Type:  Design and construct
Value:  $244 million (at 30 June 2009)
Description:

VicRoads awarded a contract to Leighton Contractors to design and construct the Deer Park Bypass in Western Melbourne.  The bypass stretches from the Western Highway at Caroline Springs to the Western Ring Road in Sunshine West. The Western Highway is the main road link between Melbourne and Adelaide, with the Deer Park section of the highway carrying over 70,000 vehicles per day.

Leighton Contractors delivered the 9.3km Deer Park Bypass, a four lane freeway with two lanes in each direction. This allows motorists to bypass a 7km stretch of the Western Highway containing 20 intersections and six sets of traffic lights. The new bypass significantly reduces traffic congestion around Melbourne's expanding outer western suburbs, and has reduced travel times by up to 15 minutes during peak periods.
