Leighton Contractors, through its Leighton Mining division, has been awarded a contract at Duralie Coal Mine by Gloucester Coal. Duralie Coal Mine is considered a modest sized open-cut operation in the Hunter Valley, where at full capacity the mine will aim to produce 2 million tonnes of coal a year.
The Duralie mine site has several challenges which make it unique. The coal seams dip steeply which require a great deal of expertise in the planning and scheduling of the pit. Added to these operational difficulties are the frequent periods of heavy rain that sweep the area, blasting in reactive ground and the high voltage transmission power lines that provide electricity to the surrounding area which traverse the pit.
Scope of works at Duralie Coal Mine include: mine planning; surface mining operations; operation and maintenance of equipment; and site rehabilitation.
Leighton Contractors has been providing mining services at the Duralie Coal Mine since 2006.
* For long term contracts extending beyond five years, the total contract value shown includes the value of work completed to date plus five years worth of work in hand.
