Description:

Leighton Contractors has been awarded a construction contract by Queensland's Department of Main Roads to deliver the Eastern Busway - Buranda to Main Avenue project in Brisbane's south.

Leighton Contractors joins Sinclair Knight Merz, Maunsell AECOM and Queensland Transport to form the Eastern Busway Alliance.

The Buranda to Main Avenue stage of the busway is part of Queensland Transport's overall vision to extend the busway east through to Capalaba.

The project involves sections of tunnel, elevated structure and at-grade busway, constructed through heavily built-up urban areas.

This section of busway includes 1.05km of two-way busway with full grade separation from the existing local road network.

The scope of works includes:
  • cut and cover tunnels
  • a bridge over Norman Creek
  • elevated viaduct
  • creation of busway stations at Stones Corner and Main Avenue, Coorparoo
  • extension of the busway that provides for a future tunnel to extend the busway further to the east
  • a connection ramp and signalised intersection with the Main Avenue that will serve as part of the interim busway
  • provision of 'kiss and ride' facilities associated with the Stones Corner station and Main Avenue stop
  • mechanical and electrical plant to facilitate busway and station operations; and
  • intelligent transport systems for the operating busway.

Upon completion, the project will help deliver benefits such as relieve congestion and significantly reduce travel times for the local community and transport users.
