This is a joint venture project undertaken by the ConnectEast consortium with construction performed by Thiess and John Holland.
The project is Australia's largest urban road development and involved the construction of a 45 kilometre roadway of predominantly three-lane capacity, 17 interchanges, over 88 bridges and a 1.6 kilometre twin lane tunnel under Mullum Mullum Creek.
Over 35 kilometres of continuous bicycle and pedestrian paths and extensive urban design and landscaping was incorporated into the project.
As part of these works, Thiess and John Holland also constructed the Ringwood and Dandenong Southern Bypasses. Fully integrated into the EastLink Project, these non-tolled bypasses have enhanced traffic flows and delivered the infrastructure necessary to accommodate growth in the region. The Dandenong Bypass was open to traffic ahead of schedule in December 2007.
Eastlink was delivered 5 months ahead of the contractual completion date of November 2008.
The Eastlink project was also awarded the highest accolade for construction achievement in Australia, the 2009 Australian Construction Achievement Award.
