Gold Coast Desalination Alliance

Description:  

The John Holland Group was awarded a contract to construct, operate and maintain the Gold Coast Desalination Project (GCDP) in Tugun. The GCDP was delivered by an alliance comprising of John Holland, Gold Coast City Council, the Queensland State Government, partner Veolia Water Australia, and sub alliance Sinclair Knight Merz and Cardno.

The desalination plant provides a bulk water supply  to the Gold Coast and South East  Queensland, and is part of a solution to secure the South East Queensland region's ability to fulfill future water needs. The plant is capable of producing up to 125ML of drinkable water per day.

The scope of the Gold Coast Desalination Project included:
  • designing, constructing, commissioning, operating and maintaining the seawater desalination plant for ten years
  • driving twin tunnels, 2.2km & 2km long offshore from Tugun, to be used for seawater intake and discharge, and
  • constructing a 25km long pipeline to connect the desalinated water produced by the Project to the South East Queensland water supply network.
