Hinze Dam Stage 3

Client:  Gold Coast City Council
Location:  Queensland
Start:  October 2007
Finish:  July 2011
Contract Type:  Design and construct (Alliance)
Value:  $311 million (at 31 December 2010)
Description:

Thiess, as part of the Hinze Dam Alliance (HDA), has been awarded a contract to progress Hinze Dam Stage 3 by the Gold Coast City Council.

The Alliance is a consortium of private sector partners, including Sinclair Knight Merz, URS and Thiess Pty Ltd. The project objective for the HDA is to successfully combine skills and capabilities to raise the dam wall by 15 metres, from 93.5 metres to 108.25 metres above sea level.

The purpose of the Hinze Dam project is to:
  • reduce flooding in the lower Nerang River catchment
  • increase water supply from Hinze Dam to 225 million litres per day, and
  • ensure the dam complies with current safety standards and guidelines.

Raising the dam wall will improve flood management as the dam will temporarily store flood water to delay its release to the lower reaches of the floodplain. The project will also extend the exisitng main embankment and new saddle dams up to the new wall height, raise the spill way, and re-establish recreational areas and road infrastructure associated with Hinze Dam.

The upgrade of the dam will be significant in protecting properties vulnerable to flooding and prevent potential flood damages. The project will also increase the dam's water storage capacity by increasing the volume of water supply to the Gold Coast community.
