Location:  New South Wales
Start:  August 2007

Contract Type:  Design and construct (Alliance)

Description:

Leighton Contractors formed part of the Northern Hume Alliance (NHA) who delivered a portion of the “Accelerated Southern Hume Duplication Package”, a New South Wales and Federal Government funded inititative. Other members of the NHA team included the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority, Maunsell Australia Pty Limited, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation Australia Pty Limited and Coffey Geotechnics Pty Limited.

The package of work involved duplicating 35kms of the Hume Highway in Southern New South Wales between the Sturt Highway at Tarcutta and Holbrook. The duplication is of freeway standard, providing divided two lane carriageways, safer access for adjoining properties, school buses, improved line marking and signage.

Sections duplicated include:
  • Sturt Highway to Tarcutta- approximately six kilometres
  • Kyeamba Hill – approximately nine kilometres
  • Little Billabong – approximately eight kilometres
  • Yarra Yarra to Holbrook – approximately 12 kilometres

The Hume Highway is the main freight route between Sydney and Melbourne and its duplication has significantly improved road safety and transport efficiency for motorists, communities and industries along this major route.
