Client:  Department of Main Roads
Location:  Queensland
Start:  November 2006
Finish:  November 2009
Contract Type:  Design and construct
Value:  $273 million (at 30 June 2009)
Description:

Leighton Contractors was awarded a contract by the Department of Main Roads to design and construct the Ipswich Logan Interchange project. The purpose of this project was to improve safety and traffic flow on the Ipswich Motorway, which is a four lane motorway carrying more than 80,000 vehicles a day. The infrastructure upgrade now caters for the fast urban expansion and population growth in South East Queensland.

The scope of the Ipswich Logan Interchange upgrade included:
  • removing existing right-side merging lanes
  • providing new left-side ramps between the Logan Motorway and the Ipswich Motorway
  • widening a 2km stretch of the Ipswich Motorway between Goodna and Gailes from four lanes to a minimum of six lanes
  • a new traffic and pedestrian underpass linking Bertha Street and Layard Street at Goodna
  • new cycle lanes and pedestrian footpaths
  • a new service road on the southern side of the Ipswich Motorway, and
  • major visual and landscaping improvements.

Overall, the Ispwich upgrade has provided additional traffic capacity to support industry expansion and job growth by improving access to the Brisbane Markets, the Port of Brisbane and the export industries hub at the mouth of the Brisbane River. Safety has also improved on the Ipswich Motorway by diverting at least 50 per cent of the vehicles that use the motorway.
