Leighton Properties developed an A-grade office tower complex, with premium services, in Sydney's central business district, which is one of the largest and most significant property development projects seen in Australia.
The KENS site is located over an entire city block within the precinct defined by Kent, Erskine, Napoleon and Sussex Streets (from which the project takes its name) and occupies a unique and commanding position in the western corridor of the Sydney CBD within walking distance of Darling Harbour. This is effectively the last complete city block available for development. It was the site of a public car park and a number of heritage listed buildings, which have been incorporated into the design.
Westpac Banking Corporation (Westpac) pre-committed to lease the entire KENS commercial office tower development in March 2003 and also agreed to pre-purchase the completed development from Leighton Properties upon completion. Westpac has consolidated 10 separate CBD offices into the larger, 33-storey tower.
Leighton Contractors was awarded the design and construction contract for the development, which involved constructing two connected towers providing approximately 74,000 square metres of commercial office space, 3020 square metres of service and retail areas, 864 car parking spaces and a landscaped urban park.
