Value:  Stage 1 and Stage 2 combined value of $432million (at 30 June 2010)
Description:

John Holland has been awarded construction of the Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) Stage 1, by Melbourne Water.

The Northern Sewerage Project (Stage 1 and 2 combined) includes construction of 12.5km of new sewer pipes ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 metres in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

The purpose of the NSP is to help protect the Merri Creek and Moonee Ponds Creek from the damaging impact of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rain, and to ensure that Melbourne's sewerage system can cope with the projected population growth in the northern Metropolitan area.

The scope of the NSP Stage 1 will include the construction of:
  • approximately 8km of sewer tunnels from Coburg in the north connecting to Melbourne Water's existing North West Sewer in Essendon. The new sewer will connect to Yarra Valley Water's Satge 2 works and intercept both Yarra Valley Water's and Melbourne Water's existing sewerage system in several places; and
  • 5 major access shafts, up to 64 metres in depth and 13 metres in diametre, to enable tunnel boring machines (TBM's) to be used for construction.
