Client:  Yarra Valley Water
Location:  Victoria
Start:  September 2007
Finish:  April 2012
Contract Type:  Construct only
Value:  $128 million (at 31 December 2010)
Description:

John Holland has been awarded construction of the Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) Stage 2, by Yarra Valley Water.

The Northern Sewerage Project (Stage 1 and 2 combined) includes construction of 12.5km of new sewer pipes ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 metres in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

The purpose of the NSP is to help protect the Merri Creek and Moonee Ponds Creek from the damaging impact of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rain, and to ensure that Melbourne's sewerage system can cope with the projected population growth in the northern Metropolitan area.

The scope of the NSP Stage 2 will include the construction of:
  • approximately 4.5km of sewer tunnels that will connect Yarra Valley Water's sewerage system (near the Merri Creek at Coburb),  to Melbourne Water's North Western Sewer (in Essendon); and
  • 3 major access shafts, up to 39 metres in depth and 10 metres in diameter, to enable Tunnel Boring Marchines (TBM's) to be used for construction.
