Description:
Thiess was awarded the Yandi - Civil and Infrastructure project by BHP Billiton, undertaking associated civil works and bulk earthworks to expand the exisiting ore handling facilities at the Yandi Iron Ore mine. The contract formed part of the Rapid Growth Project 5 (RGP5) at the mine, and is located approximately 350km south of Port Hedland and 180km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
The expansion of the Yandi Mine involved:
- site preparation, including the establishment of minor earthworks and roads, the establishment of construction water facilities, the installation of offices and associated services
- bulk earthworks associated with the construction of a coarse ore stockpile, new tertiary crushing, scalping and screening facilities
- bulk earthworks associated with the construction of a stockyard facility for stockpiling and reclaiming the ore material
- construction of a new non-process infrastructure pad including EPCM (Engineer, Procure, Construct, Manage) area facilities
- bulk earthworks for the new North West Village construction camp (an associated services contract is currently being negotiated)
- concrete construction for the new tertiary crushing, scalping, screening facilities, transfer station, tCOS ore stockpile and stockyard facilities, concrete construction for the conveyor foundations, and construction of a precast concrete arch tunnel over the existing loop railway
- three multi plate tunnel structures
- Mechanical Stabilised Earth (MSE) walls for two crushers, and
- construction of a new rail link between Yandi 1 and 2 rail sidings, including railway embankment and six span bridge.
