Al Habtoor Leighton Group, through its 45%-owned associate Al Habtoor Engineering, was awarded a contract by Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) for engineering, procurement and construction of a 20,000-man labour village on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. The village housed TDIC-Leighton staff for the various projects underway on Saadiyat Island.

The village was master-planned by Singapore's Surbana Corporation and was designed to meet international per capita standards for space, food preparation and laundry facilities.

The Saadiyat Island Construction Village included:
  • accommodation
  • kitchen
  • dining
  • recreation
  • mosque
  • cinema
  • shops
  • satellite TV
  • community notice boards, and
  • green space.

The village was produced in four clusters and there is room for further expansion to accommodate 40,000 workers if required. Buildings were designed with significant environment considerations including the installation of an energy-efficient cooling system.
