Leighton Contractors, through it's division HWE Mining, has been awarded a contract with St Ives Gold Mining to continue its mining operations at St Ives, 20km south of Kambalda, Western Australia.
The St Ives mine produces about 500,000 ounces of gold per year. The open-cut operations currently produce over 270,000 ounces of gold per year and have continued to deliver increased tonnages.
The initial 2 year contract which commenced in 2002, saw the construction of 10 open pits, with a total material volume of 17.5 million bank cubic metres. Works included excavation of ore and waste materials; maintenance of haul roads, stockpiles, waste dumps and causeway; and drainage and de-watering infrastructure for the open pits. The contract was awarded on an alliance structure basis, where Leighton Contractors' performance was subject to a full "risk-reward" incentive formula.
Leighton Contractors also participated in a joint venture with Roche Mining for the construction of a new Gold Mill at this site. Click the following link for details on the associated St Ives Gold Mill Construction.
