Client:  NSW Department of Public Works
Location:  New South Wales
Start:  May 2000
Finish:  July 2002
Contract Type:  Design and construct
Value:  $109 million (at 30 June 2002)
Description:
Leighton Contractors was awarded this high-profile design and construct contract in May 2000. The contract involved the construction of a new 11-storey high hospital structure, known as the Xavier Building, which is shared by both the St Vincent’s Private and Public Hospitals.

The Leighton team faced a number of key challenges during the project. Most significant amongst these was the need to construct the new facilities adjacent to the existing medical and health facilities which remained fully operational throughout construction. Conducting their activities sensitive to the requirements of the hospital and local community was therefore critical.

Leighton’s Xavier Building houses a host of state-of-the-art medical and health facilities including:
  • Nine in-patient wards;
  • An accident and emergency department and out-patients’ ward;
  • Cardiothoracic, oncology/haematology; oral health, HIV and anaesthetics services;
  • Mortuary and pathology labs;
  • Two operating theatres and associated recovery facilities; and,
  • An Intensive Therapy Unit.

Work at the site was completed in June 2002, and the completed facility was handed over to the client a month later.
