Design Competition Selects “KENS” Site Architect
Issue Date: 26 April 2001Issued By: Leighton Properties Pty LimitedLeighton Properties (LPPL) today announced that the architectural firm, DCM Sydney (Richard Johnson Director), had been selected as the preferred architect for the KENS site development in Sydney's western CBD.
DCM was selected by a Design Competition Jury following a design competition conducted under the “Design Excellence and Competitive Design Process” provisions of the Central Sydney Local Environmental Plan. LPPL had invited 5 design/architectural firms to prepare design proposals for the site.
The KENS site is an entire city block, located within the precinct defined by Kent, Erskine, Napoleon and Sussex Streets and occupies a unique and commanding position in the western corridor of the Sydney CBD. The site is over 10,000 sqm in area.
Managing Director of Leighton Properties, Vyril Vella said “LPPL proposes to develop this distinctive split tower commercial development of outstanding architectural design and finely detailed proportions. The development will demonstrate a high level public and pedestrian amenity via through site links and very active and landscaped uses at ground level.
We are committed to conserving the heritage items on the site. The DCM scheme gives us great confidence that both our objectives and those of the City of Sydney can be realised through this most innovative design.”
Leighton Properties will now work with DCM to undertake the detailed design work necessary to submit a development application to the Central Sydney planning Committee later this year.
Mr Vella thanked the other participants in the Design Competition and complemented all of them for the extraordinary high quality of their design work and the commitment to the competition.
“The outstanding quality and energy of all the participants made the jury’s task very difficult.” he said.
The five designs will be on public display from early May at the City Exhibition Space, Level 4, Customs House, Circular Quay.
The other four participating architectural firms in the design competition were:
- Crone/Caro – Architects in Association
- Peddle Thorp & Walker
- Rice Daubney Group
- Travis McEwen Group.
The proposed development will be comprised of:
The public urban space is designed to capture the historical and maritime references, in particular the original harbour’s edge and terracing using raw textured materials including sandstone and wharf timbers.
A requirement of Leighton Properties was to enable the development to occur in stages to meet the market demand. The development could be delivered to the market by mid 2004, to take advantage of the low vacancy and forecast strong demand for commercial space in the Sydney CBD.
