Leighton Asia (Northern) lands major tunnelling project in Hong Kong

Issue Date: 30 September 2003
Issued by: Leighton Asia (Northern) Limited

Leighton Asia (Northern), in joint venture with Kumagai Gumi, has secured an HK$1.8 billion (A$350 million) road tunnel project in Hong Kong for the Highways Department.  Leighton Asia (Northern)’s share is HK$900 million (A$175 million).

The 2.1 kilometre Eagle’s Nest Tunnel, from Butterfly Valley in Kowloon to Sha Tin in Hong Kong’s New Territories, forms part of the Route 9 corridor.

Under the contract, Leighton is responsible for the construction of:
  • twin 2.1 kilometre, three-lane tunnels and a 400 metre ventilation adit
  • North and South tunnel portal buildings
  • a ventilation building off Tai Po Road
  • a 3-storey administration building
  • electrical and mechanical buildings
  • a toll plaza and toll collection facilities
  • a footbridge, subway and canopy at the toll plaza
  • a 500 metre tunnel approach road
  • miscellaneous earthworks, roadworks and landscaping

Electrical and mechanical (E & M) works form a significant component of the project. Leighton is responsible for all E & M works for both the Eagle’s Nest Tunnels and the adjacent, separately constructed, Sha Tin Heights Tunnel.

The project will commence next month and is scheduled for completion in December 2006.

Managing Director of Leighton Asia (Northern), Mr Will Hamilton, said the new contract had taken the company’s workload to record levels.

“It’s taken our work in hand for Hong Kong to a record HK$4 billion (A$777 million) and for Leighton Asia (Northern) to a record HK$5 billion (A$975 million),” he said.

“To achieve a record workload in such a competitive and subdued economic environment is a tremendous achievement.  It sets us up for a period of considerable growth,” he said.

Leighton Asia Limited comprises two main operating entities: Leighton Asia (Northern) – which covers operations in Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos - and Leighton Asia (Southern) – which covers operations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and India.
