Leighton Asia Secures A$100 million Rail Project in Indonesia
Issue Date: 9 October 2001
Issued by: Leighton Asia Limited
Leighton Asia, through its wholly owned subsidiary PT John Holland Constructions Indonesia, has been awarded a US$50 million (A$100 million) rail project in Java, Indonesia by the Indonesian Government’s Ministry of Communications.
Leighton will undertake the project in joint venture with PT Adhi Karya (Persero) and Itochu Corporation. Funding for the project is being provided by the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC). Leighton Asia’s share is US$40 million (A$80 million).
The project involves the construction of approximately 65 kilometres of new rail track adjacent to an existing track, forming a double-tracking railway system between Cikampek and Cirebon in West Java.
Additional civil works include the construction of 12 new bridges, permanent way embankments, cuttings, culverts, drainage and station facilities. The contract also includes the design, supply and installation of electronic interlocking signalling and telecommunications, as well as the refurbishment of old signalling systems.
Construction will commence on 17 November and is scheduled for completion in March 2005.
Leighton Asia’s Managing Director, Mr John Faulkner, said the company’s relationship with Itochu was critical to the securing of the project.
He said that there were further rail infrastructure projects coming on line in Indonesia and that the company was well positioned to benefit from these.
Leighton Asia currently has six major rail projects underway in Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia. The company’s growing expertise in rail infrastructure will allow it to capitalise on the increasing rail opportunities arising throughout the region.
Leighton Asia operates in Indonesia as PT John Holland Constructions Indonesia. The company is currently undertaking three major coal mining projects there and is pursuing further civil engineering, building, telecommunications and contract mining projects throughout the country.
Leighton Asia Limited, part of Australia’s largest project development and contracting group, the Leighton Group, has been successfully operating in Asia since 1975. It has become one of Asia’s largest broad-based construction contractors, with expertise in all aspects of civil, marine, building and foundation engineering and construction. The company’s current workload exceeds A$1.5 billion.
Leighton Asia operates in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and China and has over 2,000 employees throughout the region.
ENDS.
