Leighton Asia Secures A$37 million Power Station Project in Vietnam

Issue Date:  01 November 2001
Issued By:  Leighton Asia Limited

Siemens Power Generation (PG) has awarded Leighton Asia Limited a A$37 million (US$18 million) contract for the design and construction of the civil works for Phu My 3, a new 716 MW combined-cycle power station that forms part of the Phu My power complex located east of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

Siemens is the EPC contractor for this project, which is funded by a BP-led consortium. The plant will be powered by natural gas produced from the Nam Con Son gas project.

Design has commenced and construction will start this month.  The project will be completed in April 2003.

Leighton Asia completed another power station project for Siemens PG in Thailand in September 1997 and its success on this project helped the company secure the new project in Vietnam.

Leighton Asia’s Managing Director, Mr John Faulkner, said that the new project showed that opportunities were still available despite the generally subdued economic climate.

“There are definitely legitimate projects for legitimate clients – particularly for multinationals like Siemens – coming on line in the short- to medium-term,” Mr Faulkner said.

“We’ve spent a lot of time identifying this type of project and we’re confident that despite the current slowdown we’ll be able to convert similar opportunities in Indochina in the near future.

“The award follows a THB385 million contract we secured with Procter & Gamble in Thailand in June for the design and construction of a 31,500 square metre distribution centre,” he said.

Other recent projects won by Leighton Asia include an A$100 million rail project in Indonesia and an A$112 million manufacturing facility for Philip Morris in the Philippines.

Leighton Asia Limited – part of Australia’s largest project development and contracting group, the Leighton Group – has been successfully operating in Asia since 1975.

It has become one of Asia’s largest broad-based construction contractors, with expertise in all aspects of civil engineering and infrastructure, building, marine engineering, contract mining and telecommunications. The company’s current workload exceeds A$1.5 billion.

Leighton Asia operates in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and China and has over 2,000 employees throughout the region.
