Construction giant Leighton Asia Limited, an operating company of Leighton Holdings Limited, is set to have its most successful year over and to seal its position as one of the top construction companies in the Asian region, with contracts worth a total of HK$3.6 billion (A$600 million) secured on the new Hong Kong Airport megaproject.

Leighton Asia established its regional headquarters in Hong Kong in 1975 and has been operating in the region for more than 20 years. It is one of Asia's largest broad-based construction contractors with expertise in all aspects of civil, marine, building and foundation engineering and construction.

The company has been awarded eight major contracts, worth approximately HK$3.6 billion (A$600 million), for different aspects of Hong Kong's massive Airport Core Programme megaproject, one of the world's largest infrastructure developments involving nine major infrastructure projects in addition to a new airport.

Leighton Asia was recently awarded the HK$1.2 billion (A$205 million) Aviation Fuel Service Facility contract involving the construction of marine facilities including two fuel unloading berths, discharging points and two submarine pipelines connecting to a twin receiving pipeline at Chek Lap Kok. Included also is a 150,000m3 tank farm, administration building, workshops and receiving facilities and an advanced control system which will fully coordinate all fuel deliveries and usage.

Managing Director of Leighton Asia, Mr John Faulkner, said the company's ability to sustain a high workload in Hong Kong's competitive market has produced such positive results and its involvement in the Airport Core Programme projects will enable Leighton to further demonstrate its engineering, design and construction management skills.

"We have developed an excellent reputation for engineering projects in Hong Kong and a particular expertise in pipeline projects. Our ability to deliver the completed product on or before time and within budget has been a key element in the successful growth of our business over the past few years," Mr Faulkner said.

The other ACP projects undertaken by Leighton Asia in Hong Kong include:
  • HK $2.6 billion (A$500 million) joint venture contract for the West Kowloon Reclamation - Northern Area Phase 3. Leighton's share of this contract is HK$450 million (A$90 million).
  • HK$830 million (A$145 million) contract for the Route 3/Lantau Fixed Crossing interchange advance earthworks on Tsing Yi Island.
  • HK$969 million (A$180 million) joint venture contract to construct the Tung Chung section of the North Lantau Expressway. Leighton's share is HK$146 million (A$28 million).
  • HK$338 million (A$65 million) contract for the North Lantau Raw Water Pipeline Stage 1 project.
  • HK$27 million (A$5 million) contract for the raw water submarine pipeline at Chek Lap Kok.
  • HK$146 million (A$26 million) contract for the Ground Transportation Centre, Substructure at Chek Lap Kok.
  • HK$438 million (A$75 million) contract to design and construct an airline catering facility for LSG Lufthansa Service at Chek Lap Kok.

Leighton presently operates throughout Asia, with current projects in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and China and employs over 3000 people throughout the region.

Leighton Contractors (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd has recently been awarded a RM380 million (A$193 million) project to design and construct Malaysia's first elevated highway, a huge infrastructure project in that country.
