Issue Date: 14 March 2002Issued By: Leighton Asia LimitedLeighton Asia Limited has secured three new contracts worth a total of A$235 million (US$121 million) in Hong Kong and Singapore.
The largest of these is an A$200 million (US$103 million) contract to build six hi-rise housing towers for the Hong Kong Housing Authority. The project involves the construction of three 47-storey towers and three 41-storey towers, containing a total of 2,550 apartments, over a period of 40 months.
Construction will commence immediately and the project is due for completion in June 2005.
The new contract continues Leighton Asia’s successful relationship with the Hong Kong Housing Authority, for whom the company has completed 17 projects over the past 20 years.
Also in Hong Kong, Leighton has secured an A$28 million (US$14 million) contract for the design and construction of a satellite earth station at Tai Po for Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co. Ltd.
The contract includes the design and construction of a network operation centre, a satellite control centre, a satellite farm and associated buildings.
Construction has commenced and the project will be completed by May 2003.
In Singapore, United Cement Pte Limited has appointed Leighton to construct a 40,000 tonne duo-cell cement silo at Pulau Damar Laut. The project, worth approximately A$7.5 million (US$4 million), is the first Leighton has undertaken in Singapore since 1993, when it completed a petrochemical project there for Mobil.
Leighton will be responsible for construction of the 75 metre high silo with a diameter of 27 metres, along with the piling and construction of an administration building and warehouse.
The project has commenced and is scheduled for completion in August 2002.
Leighton Asia’s Managing Director, John Faulkner, said that whilst the economic climate was still quite tough, there are selective opportunities for companies like Leighton Asia that have extensive experience in the region and are familiar with the local operating environment.
“We’re pursuing a number of other prospects and are confident of converting some of these before the end of the financial year,” Mr Faulkner said.
The new projects increased Leighton Asia’s work in hand to over A$1.5 billion (US$770 million).
