Leighton awarded major casino project in Macau

Issue Date: 15 June 2004
Issued by: Leighton Asia (Northern)

Leighton Asia (Northern), in joint venture with China State Construction Engineering,  has secured an A$350 million (HK$2 billion) contract for the design and construction of a new hotel and casino complex in Macau for Wynn Resorts.  Leighton’s share is A$175 million (HK$1 billion).

Under the contract, the Leighton-China State Joint Venture will be responsible for the design and construction of a five-star development that comprises:
  • a hotel tower
  • gaming areas
  • 9 restaurants
  • a retail arcade
  • a ballroom and meeting rooms
  • a health club and spa
  • an underground carpark

Design work has already commenced and the project is due for completion by fourth quarter 2006.

Managing Director of Leighton Asia (Northern), Mr Will Hamilton, said Leighton was delighted to be working with an international client with a reputation for quality.

“Wynn Resorts has operated and is now developing some of the world’s premier entertainment complexes,” Will said.

“They were specifically looking for an international contractor with a track record of delivering quality projects. We’re delighted that they have selected us and look forward to working with them to produce what will become a landmark in Macau.

“This project pushes our work in hand in Hong Kong, Macau & China to A$925 million (HK$5.3 billion) – the highest it has ever been,” he said.

Macau, located approximately 60 kilometres south-west of Hong Kong, has been an established gaming market for more than 40 years. A former Portuguese enclave, it was handed back to China in 1999 and operates as a Special Administrative Region of that country. Wynn Resorts is currently one of three concessionaires permitted to operate casinos in Macau.

In Asia, Leighton comprises two main operating entities: Leighton Asia (Northern) – which covers operations in Hong Kong, China, Macau, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos – and Leighton Asia (Southern) – which covers operations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and India.
