Leighton Contractors Wins $115 Million Industrial Plant Facility
Issue Date: 24 June 2003
Issued by: Leighton Contractors Pty Limited
Leighton Contractors announced today that it is building a new production facility for Australian packaging company Amcor as an addition to its existing glass furnace and manufacturing plant in Gawler, South Australia.
The existing plant, which was Amcor’s entry into the production of wine bottles, was designed and constructed by Leighton Contractors with German technology supplier Heye-Glas in 2002, and delivered several months ahead of schedule.
The new production facility will have a capacity of approximately 200 million wine bottles per annum and cost about $115 million to build.
Leighton Contractors, Managing Director Bob Merkenhof said, “We’re delighted to be awarded the second phase of this important project by Amcor. It’s a relationship we value highly and our project team worked extremely hard to create a first class facility in the first phase of the project. This high level of service will be continued into the second phase of the project and we wish Amcor every success with the expansion of the business.”
Work has already started to prepare the site for the new production facilities that are expected to be operational by mid 2005. Amcor, Leighton Contractors and Heye-Glas are currently reviewing technical aspects of the new project. Construction is expected to commence immediately.
Leighton Contractors plans to use the same project team who worked on the first stage of the Gawler plant.
Ian Luck, Leighton Contractors General Manager Vic, SA, Tas & NZ said, “Our team has considerable expertise in this specialised industrial field, having undertaken a significant amount of research into the production of wine bottles prior to commencing the first phase of the Gawler plant, and of course having successfully delivered the first stage of this exciting project.”
Group General Manager Amcor Glass, John Winckel said that he was extremely happy with the quality and performance of the plant’s first stage. “We have had great support from Leighton Contractors and Heye-Glas in the construction and commissioning of the wine glass plant, “ he said.
Leighton Contractors is an Australian market leader in the delivery of complex infrastructure, project development, building, contract mining and construction. The company currently has in excess of $2 billion work in hand and employs over 2,000 people.
