The John Holland-Transfield Joint Venture is Awarded $298 million in Contracts for Regional Fast Rail Project

The Victorian Government has appointed the Regional Rail Link Consortium – comprising two of Australia’s leading contractors - John Holland and Transfield Construction in a 50:50 joint venture – to upgrade the railway from Melbourne to Bendigo and Melbourne to Traralgon.
John Holland Managing Director, Bill Wild and Transfield Construction Chief Executive Officer, Steve MacDonald, said they were delighted to have been selected.
“We are confident our combined expertise will deliver both projects on schedule, within budget and to the complete satisfaction of the Victorian government and communities involved. Our focus will be to provide seamless delivery that meets or exceeds their expectations,” said Mr Wild.
“We will work closely with the Victorian Government and the relevant communities and stakeholders to ensure smooth construction and an absolute minimum of disruption to the travelling public.
“Regional Fast Rail – part of the Partnerships Victoria Program – will provide regional and rural Victorians with a state-of-the-art rail system that improves travel times, increases passenger confidence and comfort, and boosts opportunities for economic growth in these important regions,” said Mr MacDonald.
Both John Holland and Transfield Construction have extensive experience in rail systems, design, construction planning and maintenance. This appointment confirms their large investment in rail systems and equipment and leadership in rail infrastructure development across Australia.

Alice Springs – Darwin Rail Project
RRL partner John Holland is the leading participant in the design and construction of a massive 1440 km of standard gauge railway from Alice Springs to Darwin; one of the most exciting and challenging rail projects in the world. John Holland is also a member of a consortium responsible for maintenance of 800 km of track between Tarcoola and Alice Springs. When the new the Alice to Darwin track is complete, John Holland will take over maintenance of the entire network.
Westrail Infrastructure, Western Australia
RRL partner, John Holland a leading participant in the maintenance of the urban and regional rail networks in Western Australia. All works are completed under traffic, during scheduled occupations of the system or overnight, when the track is unoccupied. John Holland’s contract for maintenance of the urban system was recently extended by five years while the regional contract was extended by 12 months prior to its privatisation.
Brisbane Airport Rail Link
In May this year, RRL partner Transfield successfully completed the $220 million elevated passenger rail link from Brisbane Airport to the city centre. The company is also responsible for the maintenance of the system for the next 30 years.
New Southern Rail, Sydney
Transfield and RRL major subcontractor, Maunsell McIntyre, were two of the lead companies in the design and construction of a $900 million underground rail link between Sydney’s domestic and international air terminals and the city centre. A twin track system, the 10km rail link was officially opened last year.
Koolyanobbing to Kalgoorlie Track Upgrade
John Holland, in partnership with MVM Rail, is currently upgrading 200km of standard gauge track between Koolyanobbing to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.
Melbourne City Link
In a joint venture with Obayashi, Transfield recently delivered the Melbourne City Link Project to the Victorian Government and the Victorian community. A massive infrastructure undertaking, the $2.2 billion project included: the design and construction of more than 23 km of major road infrastructure; a 5.2 km tunnel under the Yarra River; construction or modification of 34 bridges and a state-of-the-art electronic tolling system.

Thiess ALSTOM Joint Venture Awarded Two Country Works Packages on the Regional Fast Rail Project

A Joint Venture, comprising major infrastructure services companies, Thiess and ALSTOM, has been chosen as the Contractor on the Ballarat and Geelong corridors for the Regional Fast Rail Project. The projects have a combined value of $200 million.
The Thiess ALSTOM Joint Venture will be responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of track, civil, signal, and communication works to achieve the Department of Infrastructure’s specified travel times for each corridor.
Thiess and ALSTOM have a long and successful history of working together on infrastructure projects throughout Australia, including the Sydenham Electrification Project in Victoria and the Blacktown to Richmond Project in NSW.
The companies have proven experience in the construction and maintenance of Melbourne’s metropolitan railway network. Thiess is currently providing infrastructure maintenance services to M>Train and M>Tram and ALSTOM is providing rolling stock and infrastructure asset management to Connex and tram maintenance services to Metrolink.

Construction will commence late-2002 with all works to be completed by mid-2005.
