Leighton Signs $1 billion Contract with AMC
Issue Date: 29 August 2002
Issued by: Leighton Contractors Pty Limited
Leighton Contractors Pty Limited today signed a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Australian Magnesium Corporation to deliver the Stanwell magnesium project near Rockhampton, confirming its intention to move full steam into the EPC market.
The contract valued in the order of $1billion has Leighton delivering the project as Principal Contractor responsible for all major aspects of the project’s delivery including design, engineering, procurement and construction.
Leighton Contractors Managing Director, Bob Merkenhof said the finalisation and signing of the contract was a major step forward for the company.
“Today we are embarking on a new stage of growth within Leighton. Our vision of providing the Australian heavy industrial and process sectors with an Australian based EPC contractor has become a reality,” he said.
Various world-leading design and contracting companies have joined with Leighton to deliver the Stanwell magnesium project. These include:
- Clough Engineering
- United KG
- SNC – Lavalin
- IMS
- Mg JV (Kvaerner / Worley Joint Venture)
- Worley Limited
- Clough and United KG are working with Leighton to construct this world-scale facility, which will require more than 160,000 metres of pipe, 30,000 cubic metres of concrete and more than 8,000 tonnes of steel.
Leighton Contractors General Manager, Laurie Voyer said the various companies had come together to form an Alliance, which all believe will focus participants on achieving outstanding project outcomes.
“The team we’ve assembled to deliver the Stanwell Magnesium Project is world-class.
“We are confident we have the team, resources and systems in place to achieve AMC’s goal of producing magnesium by late 2004,” he said.
The project is expected to employ approximately 1,300 people and reach its peak employment figures around June 2003.
Mr Voyer said early works had already commenced at the Stanwell site.
“We have a small team on site now currently undertaking earthworks and civil operations. I expect the team will progressively grow during the next couple of months and by early next year the project will be in full swing,” he said.
Leighton Contractors is an Australian market leader in the delivery of complex infrastructure, project development, contract mining and construction. The company is part of the Leighton Group and has in excess of $2 billion worth of work in hand, and employs approximately 1,800 people.
