Leading construction and services contractor, John Holland, a member of the Leighton Holdings Group, has been awarded a six year contract by Melbourne Water Corporation, to assist in the delivery of a number of major sewer tunnelling projects. John Holland Managing Director Bill Wild said he was delighted that the company’s specialist Tunnelling division had been awarded this major contract.

‘The new contract follows the recent successful commencement of the $1.1B design and construct contract for Sydney’s Lane Cove Tunnel, in which John Holland is a 50 per cent partner.’

Leighton awarded A$80 million coal mining contract in Indonesia

Issue Date: 18 May 2004
Issued by: Leighton Asia Limited

PT Leighton Contractors Indonesia has secured a three-year A$80 million contract for mining operations at a new coal mine in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, for PT Tanito Harum (TANITOcoal).

Under the contract, Leighton is responsible for the open cut mining of coal for a three year period. The scope of work includes the removal of overburden, the loading and transportation of coal from the mine site to the port, and maintenance of the mine’s haul road. Leighton is currently constructing the 8.5 kilometre haul road from the mine site to the port area under a separate contract.

The coal haul road is expected to be completed in July, when mine development and prestripping will commence. Production mining will commence later this year.

TANITOcoal is currently constructing a coal processing and barge loading facility on the Mahakam River. The mine is part of TANITOcoal’s expansion plans and is located approximately one and a half hours drive from Samarinda, East Kalimantan on the northern side of the river.

PT Tanito Harum is one of Indonesia’s first private coal mining companies. The company has been operating for more than 20 years and is currently producing over three million tonnes of coal per annum from its other mines in East Kalimantan.

In Asia, Leighton comprises two main operating entities: Leighton Asia (Southern) – which covers operations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and India – and Leighton Asia (Northern) – which covers operations in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

ENDS.
