Brambles Australia Ltd, which has been working with Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd and Austrack Pty Ltd, today confirmed its intention to develop a coal and general bulk terminal at Walsh Point in the Port of Newcastle.

The parties are now seeking public input to the project’s Environmental Impact Statement.

For the project to proceed beyond the EIS stage, external funding will need to be obtained together with finalising additional equity partners.

The project is intended to start as a 20 million tonne per annum coal facility with capacity for future expansion. The handling of a range of general bulk products, including grains and mineral concentrates is also part of the project.

Brambles will be responsible for managing the facility.

The port terminal is part of a broader strategy that involves the provision of an integrated port and rail service.
