Pacific Motorway Adds Last Big Player
Issue Date: 06 August 1998Issued By: Queensland Minister for Transport and Minister for Main Roads, Member for CookThe final major Pacific Motorway construction contract has been awarded for $99 million, Main Roads Minister Steve Bredhaner announced today.
Mr Bredhaner said Thiess Contractors Pty Ltd has gained its second major contract on the $750 million project.
"This is a landmark contract in that it is the sixth and last major construction for the Pacific Motorway" he said. "All the major players are now on-board."
"From here on, it will be the hard slog of construction to have the entire, 43km project open to traffic in 20 months time."
Mr Bredhaner said "The contract would also create an additional 840 direct and indirect jobs over each of the next two years. This will take the total number of jobs at the height of construction to about 2000.
"The recently introduced lower speed limits of 80 & 90 km per hour on the section of the highway currently being constructed would also apply on this new section announced today.
"Motorists are to be praised for adhering to these new limits which are being constantly monitored. The Government is committed to the safety of workers and motorists in the area of the construction site."
"It is very pleasing to see motorists behaving in a sensible way in the area of the roadworks," he said.
The latest Thiess contract runs from Oxenford to Gaven and includes:
- 8.4 km of eight-lane motorway
- grade separated interchanges at Helensvale Road, Gold Coast Highway and Smith St Motorway;
- two bridges over Millaroo Drive, four bridges across Saltwater Creek and three bridges across Coombah Creek;
- a pedestrian overpass at Helensvale and a pedestrian underpass at Gold Coast Highway; and
- various drainage culverts, on and off-ramps, roundabouts, intersections and service roads.
