Siemens and Thiess Announce New Telecommunications Joint Venture

Issue Date:  20 July 2000
Issued By:  Thiess Pty Ltd

A newly announced Joint Venture between Siemens and Thiess is poised to become one of Australia’s largest providers of complete telecommunication network solutions in a market worth $3B.

Launched this week in Brisbane, Siemens Thiess Communications will actively seek outsourcing opportunities in the dynamic telecommunications carrier and enterprise markets.

Thiess Managing Director Mr Martin Albrecht said the joint venture combined Siemens’ impressive track record in innovative communications technology and Thiess’ strong design, construction and project management capabilities.

“This is a unique alliance, combining the skills and resources of two prominent and well established organisations. It brings together for the first time in Australia and New Zealand the fundamental building blocks needed to deliver complete end-to-end communication solutions for carrier and large enterprise customers,” Mr Albrecht said.

“Thiess has built a solid reputation in the communications industry and is keen to keep the momentum going. We see this as a quantum step in the development of this business.”

The alliance follows the successful Siemens and Thiess SILCAR joint venture, which recently secured a multimillion-dollar telepower contract with Telstra.

With annual Australian and New Zealand revenues of more than $1.1B, Siemens is one of the world’s leading providers of end-to-end solutions for voice, data and mobile networks, for both carrier and enterprise networks.

Mr Helmut Pekarek, Chairman and Managing Director of Siemens Ltd, said the joint venture would play a significant part in broadening Siemens’ role in the Australian and New Zealand telecommunications industry, with this move into the network professional services market.

“I am excited about the potential that this Joint Venture brings to the market as I have committed Siemens to seeking strategic alliances which deliver to market a unique value proposition. This Joint Venture provides our customers with the best of both the Siemens technology and Thiess construction worlds under one roof,” stated Mr Pekarek.

With an annual turnover in excess of $1.6B, Thiess is one of Australasia’s largest integrated engineering companies. Thiess’ core business disciplines include communications, building and civil construction, mining, process engineering and environmental services.
