Issue Date:  20 October 1997
Issued By:  Thiess Contractors Pty Limited

Thiess is pleased to be acknowledged amongst Australia's leaders in best practice delivery of Human Resource management for its Affirmative Action programmes.

Thiess Managing Director, Mr Martin Albrecht said that Thiess prides itself as being an employer of choice. Our people are our most important asset, a vital ingredient in the success of our business.

"This year has been a positive year in Affirmative Action for Thiess, and we have continued to maintain and build upon the performance levels and outcomes that have been previously achieved".

"I also see encouraging signs from the (Construction and Mining) industry as a whole. There is greater acceptance of the contribution of women in non-traditional roles, and positive expectations. There is however, still a way to travel." Said Mr Albrecht.

Some of the key aspects of Thiess' programme include:
  • Communicating the company policy for equitable employment practices (through communication tools such as an EEO booklet, EEO Guidelines for Managers & Supervisors, Welcome to Thiess induction booklet, and regular Thiess newsletters).
  • Conduct training and development, particularly through the Thiess Skills Development programme (a fully accredited, company sponsored programmed focused on identifying and targeting individuals needs).

Thiess' goals for continuous improvement in the year ahead are to:

  • increase the number of female employees who undertake training and development. examine the progression of female employees in Thiess.
  • recruit more females into non-traditional roles within Thiess, through promotion of vocational training, and the Thiess graduate development program.
