Thiess in $85m Alliance to Raise Central Queensland Dam
Issue Date: 13 August 2000Issued By: Awoonga Alliance The Gladstone Area Water Board, Thiess Pty Ltd, Department of Natural Resources’ State Water Projects and PPK Environment & Infrastructure Pty Ltd have joined forces in an $85M alliance to raise Awoonga Dam, in central Queensland.
Situated on the Boyne River south of Gladstone and providing the region’s main water source, Awoonga will be raised by 10 metres, increasing the dam’s capacity from 283,000 Megalitres to almost 800,000 Megalitres. Associated works will include major relocation of road, bridge, rail, power and telecommunications infrastructure.
Gladstone Area Water Board CEO Mr John Flutter said raising the dam would be a great boost to the Gladstone region.
“Gladstone is a world-recognised location for major process industries, such as power stations, alumina refineries and cement plants, so the availability of a reliable water supply is critical,” Mr Flutter said.
“Increasing the capacity of Awoonga Dam will therefore contribute to the continued success of these industries and the region’s ongoing development.”
“This is a key project for the Board and we are convinced that we have the best possible team to carry it out.”
The Awoonga Dam project will be delivered via an alliance contract to ensure that tight schedule and budget objectives are met.
Thiess General Manager Qld/NT/Pacific Mr Murray Fox said the company had contributed to successful alliance projects in the past and was looking forward to working with the Awoonga team.
“Thiess is a strong supporter of this type of project delivery, as it allows all participants to share in both the risk and the reward, while ensuring ‘best for project’ results,” Mr Fox said.
“We now look forward to working with our engineering partners, State Water Projects and PPK, to deliver first class design and construction outcomes to the Board and the Gladstone region.”
Construction of Awoonga Dam will commence in October with completion expected by mid 2002.
Ends.
