Thiess Preferred for Major Road Project in NSW

Issue Date:  23 December 1996

Thiess Contractors has been named preferred contractor for the design, construction and maintenance of the 22km Bulahdelah Deviation. The value of the project is estimated to be over $100M.

Thiess welcomed the announcement made today, which is part of a joint initiative of the Federal and NSW Governments to upgrade the Pacific Highway between Hexham and the Queensland border.

Thiess' NSW/ACT Manager, Mr David Saxelby, said that the company offered an innovative solution, incorporating an efficient design, construction and maintenance package.

"Thiess has the financial strength, the experience and the technical ability to successfully undertake the design and construction, and maintain the road over the next decade."

Thiess' solution incorporates a strong environmental focus whilst providing a safer road which will offer greater efficiencies for the travelling public.

"The existing road passes through some of the most magnificent forest areas in NSW, yet the drivers experience is more an effort in concentration rather than enjoyment" said Mr Saxelby.

"Thiess has focused on balancing the volume of earthworks to keep the gradient even. In effect, this means we will cut out the hills and bends to achieve a smoother, more even route. This will benefit travellers in both time and fuel economy, and make the trip a lot more relaxing" said Mr Saxelby.

Thiess Contractors is one of the largest civil engineering contractors in Australia and has a proven track record in the delivery of major design and construction projects.
