Thiess secures long-term maintenance and capital works for National Express Group worth $250m over 5 years

National Express Group was recently awarded the right to operate three of Victoria’s public transport businesses, Bayside Trains, Swanston Trams and the V/Line Passenger service.
The agreement covers two of these public transport businesses, Bayside Trains (15 years) and Swanston Trams (12 years), and will generate $35 million in mandated capital works and approximately $40 million per annum in maintenance work. The total value of work for Thiess in the first five years is estimated at $250 million and adds a further long-term earnings stream to the company’s existing portfolio of long-term businesses in mining, water and waste management.
Thiess’ General Manager, Mr. David Clark, said, “The award of this contract concludes what has been a very smooth negotiation process. We are looking forward to an equally smooth transition period on 29th August when we commence our activities for National Express Group.
“We have been most impressed with the skills of the existing workforce and staff teams, and together with National Express we plan to deliver an improved public transport service for Melbourne,” said Mr Clark.
Thiess will undertake a broad range of activities including track and facilities maintenance. Thiess also intends to enter into a services agreement with Rail Services Australia to access additional expertise in rail asset management.
